yeah but the battery doesn't stay. I have had the 820 for over a year and the battery lasts a grand total of 15 minutes...barely enough time to go and find the charger
Worst battery I've ever had...16 months old and it won't run the laptop for 5 minutes!
Crappy battery indeed, 5 minutes at most and no warnings when it shuts off... :-((.
I got my D820 about 2 years ago with the extended battery. Now it will not last more than 15 minutes and yes, it does shut down without any warning. I just got a $326.47 quote from Dell for a replacement battery.
2 Years ago when I got a Dell D820 the battery would last about 3-4 hours. Then for the last 6 months it's lucky to last 30 minutes. Now it will not last 2 seconds. The batteries are crap but thanks to one of the only Dell battery making factories burning, there are no replacement batteries anywhere. :( And the no warning before it shuts down is an option in the Power Options of the Control Panel.
same here.
when new....wow.....5-6 hours on a charge.
last month, an hour maybe.
this month 2-4 minutes, worthless.
I about swallowed my tongue when I found that it cost over ! $300 to replace the thing. D820 is a great machine until this battery dumped on me!!!!
My battery Died after one and half year. completely. I guess that is way the guaranty for battery is only a year, because after a year it starts breaking down.
Hi,
I do have the same laptop, and my D820 battery extended 80whr one too lasted just about 18 months. But people here do not realise that that is the nature of the beast. Lithium-Ion technology (those are the cells in there) last only about 300 cycles, and after about 100 to 200 re-charges, start dropping to a stage where they eventually die before 2 years.
By the way, for the guy who got a quote for $300+ from Dell, you can get it cheaper : here . I got mine from SimpleMicro for half the price. Also considered the generic replacement from notebookbattery.com and their link is here: http://www.notebookbattery.com/p1236/Replacement-9-Cell-battery-for--Latitude-D820-/-D830/D531/D531N/product_info.html
Cheers, Tom
I am having the same problem. It used to last 3-4 hours when new. Now, after about 18 months, the battery slowly drops down to 80% in about 15 minutes and all of a sudden the laptop shuts down without warning!

Oh Joy! I just spent 45 minutes on the phone with Dell. I have to replace my D820 battery again. I replaced the original battery at 15 months, as it would only hold a 5 minute charge. Today I am 12 months and 11 days past the purchase date of the 2nd battery. They will not replace it, as they are being squeezed from a cost perspective. I am buying a 3rd party battery (Battery Tech) for half what Dell wanted.
I am done with buying Dell products. The initial cost is less but the 3 year cost is higher than HP or Apple.
You can buy a D820 battery replacement for about $80 on ebay. The problem is not the battery, which is the same technology as Dell's other notebooks. The problem is that the monitor on the D820 is slightly over fifteen inches, and combined with a wifi, bluetooth, discrete graphics card, and fast motherboard, the computer uses lots of power. Essetnailly the battery is being run "hotter". And a higher voltage makes the batteries use up faster.
Dell's new E series latitude notebook uses an LED screen which uses much less power. The battery should last all day, and it might even last the life of the notebook, I would bet over two years.

Dell D820 battery, I can't find in http://www.usa-batteries.com/laptop/dell.htm
I got a new battery but it won't charge up, I am not sure what happened but it is a dell battery so I thought it would work fine. Any help appreciated.
I have had good experience with battery life in the Latitude D series:
D800 (2004-2006): 8.5 hours (when new) on the primary 9-cell batery and the secondary battery in the modular bay (light usage i.e. word processing, image editing, spreadsheets, email). It lasted almost all the way from Houston to Frankfurt!
D820 (2007-9/2009): about 7.5 (when new) using the same setup (primary 9-cell battery & secondary battery in the modular bay). After 2.5 years I get about 5.5-6 hours.
How does battery life compare between the D820 and the D830? Thinking about buying one.
Latitude D820? The reason I'm reading these posting is because I'm having the exact same problems with these batteries. I've already changed the battery twice, yet now it won't even charge up. I've never gotten more than 3 hours of charge even with a new battery. Now the laptop is only working on power supply and is not even attempting to charge. It's the WORSE laptop battery ever.
I hate dell batteries too. Luckily this battery has been okay for about 2 1/2 years. I like the latitude series because other than a few minor issues its been great. I guess everything has its flaws but its suck when I am in the middle of class and my battery just dies during a computer science project.
With a original DELL laptop battery can only last last one/two years, Perhaps you can purchase a laptop battery replacement which is much lower cost and also can last one or two years.
