I took Brad's advice and installed Debian on a machine in the back.  I like the apt-get system, that's pretty neat but I have a lot to learn otherwise.  It's a pain configuring X, I can't get Gnome to load etc.  I'll spend more time with it today.  OpenSSL and OpenSSH are installing right now.
