For some odd reason KDE started reporting "Could not find mime type application/octet-stream" whenever I would start a KDE component. There appear to be two solutions to this problem.

Remove the file:

rm /home/[username]/.kde/share/mimelnk/application/octet-stream.desktop Or add the mime-type:

• Start the Control Center
• Open KDE Components
• Open File Associations
• Click Add
• Group "application"
• Type name "octet-stream"
• Click OK
