I've been playing with all kinds of Linux file compression.  There are some pretty killer compression schemes out there.  I've been playing with tar, zip, gzip, and bzip.  Bzip is pretty amazing, slow but really impressive compression.  You combine tar (which is cool on its own) with some decent compression and you get a good backup solution.
