Major Uptime

Today was a very sad day for me. We had to turn off our (old) primary DNS server Taurus. The server was purchased approximately three years ago, and has been running RedHat 7.1 as our primary DNS server the entire time since then. Uptime reported that the server has been up for 132 days, which is not entirely correct.

Apparently the Linux uptime counter rolls after 497 days, 2 hours, 27 minutes and 53 seconds. The counter has rolled twice since then. Thus the server has been up for 497 + 497 + 132 days. That's a grand total 1126 days (3.08 years) of uptime without ever rebooting. That's a rock solid server. Especially since it's been serving as our primary DNS server that entire time. It's not like it was sitting there unused. Pretty impressive, both for Linux and Penguin Computing.

The only reason we are replacing it is because the hardware itself is out of warranty, and it's probably due for an OS update anyway.
